Hits of the singer Shakira, part 1: the story of the songs "Whenever, Wherever" (2001), "Underneath Your Clothes" (2002) and "Objection" (2002)
Hits of the singer Shakira

On February 2, 1977, in the country of "coke" and Marquez, a girl with the ornate name Shakira Isabel Merabak Ripoll was born. Her mother was a local Colombian, and her father came from Lebanon. It was the pope who gave the daughter an Arabic name - Shakira, which in translation means "full of grace." And not lost.

Nature has awarded the girl not only beauty, but also a whole bunch of talents. In 3 years Shakira learned to read, in 4 she started to write poetry, at 8 she wrote the first song, at 10 she started to learn oriental belly dance and performed before the public, in 13 she released the first album and in 19 she was already a recognized pop star Latin America. Even that same Gabriel Garcia Marquez could not contain the admiration of the countrywoman and said: "No one can dance and sing with such an innocent sensuality that she seems to have invented."

It remained to conquer the Anglo-Saxon musical market, which Shakira in 2001 did. It was not easy for her - she preferred to write the songs herself, but she did not know English at all. Shakira hurriedly hired a tutor, bought the "Dictionary of Rhymes" and began to study the poetry of Walt Whitman, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. The result was the first English-language (and the fifth by the account) album of the singer "Laundry Service".

"Whenever, Wherever" (2001)

For the hit single, the song "Whenever, Wherever" was chosen, it brightly highlighted the best aspects of Shakira. According to her musical tastes the girl was very omnivorous, so in the song you can hear how the Arabian tunes "Lo-ro-lo-le-lo-lo-le" (though, for some reason, I remember the gypsy "Ai-no-no"), so and Peruvian instruments like the guitar of charango and the flute of Pan. Some even heard in the guitar intro echoes of the song PINK FLOYD "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".

But the English text went to Shakira, to put it mildly, strange. Americans will laugh for a long time over such poetic phrases as

I'm happy that my lips are not just for chattering,
They can shed kisses like fountains.
I'm happy that my breasts are small and modest,
So you do not confuse them with mountains ...

No wonder Shakira will place on the album and the Spanish version of this song - "Suerte" ("Luck"). Experts said that in the native language and the voice of the singer sounds better and the text looks more intelligible than on the English "tracing-paper".

However, the song was so incendiary that the absurdities of the verses did not bother anyone particularly. A strong impression was made also by energetic dances - all these shocks with hips and smooth curves, which will soon become the main trademark of the singer. In the video "Whenever, Wherever" Shakira dances in a variety of places - on the seashore, mountain tops, on the prairie with the herd of horses and even stubbornly creeps through the mud. As if confirming the words of the song, that she is ready to follow her beloved wherever.

As a result, the English-language debut was a success. "Whenever, Wherever" took 6th place in the US and became the best-selling single of 2002.

«Underneath Your Clothes» (2002)

The next English-speaking single of Shakira was the ballad "Underneath Your Clothes" ("Under your clothes"), where there were also tongue-in-cheek turns like "Because of you, I forgot the clever ways to lie." The song was another enthusiastic love confession where the singer declares "territory" under the clothes of her man and claims that she deserved it because she is a "good girl". I do not know whether it was worthwhile to study Whitman and Dylan for the sake of such texts.

Critics have reacted to the song ambiguously. Some called "Underneath Your Clothes" the main "highlight" of the album. Others considered the song music banal and secondary. And not without reason - the melody in places, almost, not to zero copied the hit band THE BANGLES "Eternal Flame" in 1989.
This did not prevent the single Shakira again get into the US TOP-10 and the top places of the charts of other countries. Only in Argentina "Underneath Your Clothes" was openly boycotted. The reason for this was the boyfriend of the singer - Antonio de la Rua (which we see in the video and it was to him that this song, apparently, was dedicated). The fact that Antonio was the son of the Argentine president, who at the height of the crisis in the country just washed his hands and resigned. Here are the music stores and expressed their protest in such an original way.

By the way, about the clip. At the beginning, we see an amusing piece of the interview, where the reporter asks Shakira if she likes to sing in English, and she starts answering him in ... Spanish. The singer considered this scene very ironic and symbolic.

"Objection (Tango)" (2002)

Not being a fan of Shakira's creativity, I have to admit that the song "Objection (Tango)" is extremely attractive to me. The singer managed to ingeniously cross the Argentine tango with rock'n'roll, the sounds of an electric guitar with bandoneon (the wind analogue of an accordion) - and even insert a rap recitative in the middle.

Although in the US this single did not show great results (# 55), in the rest of the world he went on "hurray". In addition, the song sounded in the commercial "Pepsi".

In recognition of Shakira, it was "Objection" ("Objection") was the first song she wrote in English. However, and the Spanish version - "Te Aviso, Te Anuncio" ("I warn you") - on the album is present.

Shakira:
"I prayed and asked God to send me a good song, and, after a couple of hours, music and words came to me simultaneously."

Dynamic video for the song fully meets its content. If on the previous singles Shakira sings a man, then, on the contrary, he gives an angry rebuff to the scoundrel and traitor. The same we see in the video, where the heroine of the singer is already literally fighting with her unfaithful lover and his pompous girlfriend. It goes so far that Shakira pierces and "blows away" the silicone charms of the rival in his mulberry fantasies. This once again suggests that about the size of the breast, the singer is clearly some kind of "fad".

No wonder, after a while, she will write the song "Costume Makes The Clown" with the words:

I told you that I think I was lucky with my little chest.
So, I do not think so! ..

A woman is always unhappy with something. Even such as Shakira.
